D SUMMER 2008 | GABRIEL PROJECT UPDATE
Founder Mark Melamed along with actors Kamar de los Reyes and Sherri Saum just returned from the Dominican Republic on Sunday, July 13th, bringing back 12-year-old Karen Gomez who is suffering a severe hearing loss and 6-year-old Anyieryes who is being fitted for a new prosthetic eye, arm, and foot, all due to birth defects. Both girls traveled alone to the United States with Mark, Kamar, and Sherri as their hosts and are now staying with host families in North New Jersey and will have medical treatment at hospitals there. Eight local families in the Cumberland County area of South Jersey were also helped this year by the Gabriel Project with monies allocated for rides to the doctors, baby sitters, and medical costs. Mark Melamed states “This was a very good year for helping children both locally and abroad.”
Sixteen-year-old Ania has returned home to the Ukraine just two days shy of a year long stay here in the US. Ania had surgery to repair her spine as she suffered from Scoliosis. She left the US being able t o stand straight up and ready to begin her new life at home with her mom, two sisters, and dad and other supporting family members.
Nineteen-year-old LisBel from the Dominican Republic remains in the US continuing skin grafting treatments for her severe injuries suffered when she was just three. While in the US, Lisbel has chosen to attend community college to get some course work under her belt. Her host family is very proud to continue to support her and excited about her decision to continue her education.
Four-year-old Carlos, also from the Dominican Republic was fitted with a new prosthetic leg and returned home as soon as the fit was deemed successful. As he continues to grow, Carlos will come to the US for new treatment.
D THE GABRIEL PROJECT IS GROWING!
We need your help to grow! We would like to introduce the project into schools at all levels: elementary, middle, and high school, and use what we have learned to empower our students so they CAN make a difference. Founder Mark Melamed has put together a binder full of lesson plans, information, community service and fund-raisiing ideas as well as the Project mission statement and is willing to travel to schools to introduce the Gabriel Project.
To take the Project to the next step, we need your help to find schools that might be interested in joining in this exciting opportunity. If you know a school that might be interested in adopting The Gabriel Project, please contact Mark at TGP90@aol.com with a name and phone number for him to contact.
We already have schools in New Jersey and Nevada joining the project. Mark Melamed, Gabriel Project Founder, recently returned from Las Vegas where he met with honor students from El Dorado High School. Melamed spoke with the students and teachers for 1-1/2 hours about the Gabriel Project and what other schools can do to help. El Dorado has agreed to adopt the project for this year and will begin a fund-raising campaign to participate. Over 3200 students attend this high school and are excited to help in any way. At the end of his talk, Mark Melamed gave each student their choice of flavored candy cane and held a contest with the winner receiving a carved piece of Ebony from Mr. Melamed's personal collection. Moderator for this event was Ms. Lisa Cano, Vice Principal of the school. Students and staff were impressed with Mark's talk and pictures of the kids that the Gabriel Project has helped and invites all students from other schools to participate. We look forward to hearing from you soon at TGP90@aol.com with interested schools you may know of. Thank you for helping us spread the word!
